I saw this as a banned book and thought I needed to read it。 It’s a a simple story about the phases of the moon。 It’s a cool story you could use as an example of how myths are formed。 Working in education, I don’t see it as something I would seek out to explain phases of the moon, but it does introduce some Asian culture into a story, a little。

Another cute read I read for my intro to children’s kit class。 I loved the illustrations!

Anastasia Tuckness

Kind of a fairy tale about why the moon gets larger and smaller。 Also a beautiful depiction of mother-daughter love in an Asian family, and a simply beautiful night backdrop for the story。

Cara

Lovable story imagining how the moon’s phases come about。 It would be fun to try baking a mooncake along with this story。

Peggy

Feel-good book that would be perfect for an early childhood read aloud。

A Big Mooncake for Little Star is beautiful in its simplicity。 The characters are bright and detailed against the dark black background。 Little Star's expression throughout the book is one that young children will connect with- as we've all tried to sneak treats when our parents weren't looking! In this story, Little Star's mom bakes a giant mooncake (the moon)。 However, Little Star is supposed to go to bed and wait for the mooncake to cool。 She doesn't listen and over the course of many nights, A Big Mooncake for Little Star is beautiful in its simplicity。 The characters are bright and detailed against the dark black background。 Little Star's expression throughout the book is one that young children will connect with- as we've all tried to sneak treats when our parents weren't looking! In this story, Little Star's mom bakes a giant mooncake (the moon)。 However, Little Star is supposed to go to bed and wait for the mooncake to cool。 She doesn't listen and over the course of many nights, Little Star eats away at the mooncake until none is left。 The last page reveals all the phases of the moon, thus creating a folktale of why the moon looks different each night。 This book would be a wonderful way to add read aloud to a K-2 elementary science class。 A teacher could read this book as a catalyst to begin a unit on phases of the moon。 After reading this book, the class could debate whether this is a true telling of why the moon has phases。 This could then lead into a KWL of the actual facts of why the moon has phases。 By bringing in read aloud it will engage the class into the unit of study。 This book could also be paired with Eric Carle's Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me and Moon! Earth's First Friend by Stacy McAnulty to provide many different versions of why the moon has phases。 。。。more

The illustrations in this book are very beautiful。 This story would be a great read for young children because they can relate to the little star a lot。 The little star just can help herself with trying to stay away from the mooncake。

A big mooncake for little star was in adorable tail! I like the way this story was told。 It is about the stages of the moon but it is told in an interesting way。 They set it up like it is a child eating pieces of it and that's why it is getting smaller This is a good educational story with a fun twist to teach about the different stages and what they look like。 I like the way this story was told。 It is about the stages of the moon but it is told in an interesting way。 They set it up like it is a child eating pieces of it and that's why it is getting smaller This is a good educational story with a fun twist to teach about the different stages and what they look like。 。。。more

Good picture book narration of the phases of the moon (tie astronomy and lunar new year together)

What a fun (and) and delicious way to explore the phases of the moon。 - Wallace, 2。5 years

This book was super cute and educational! It shows all the phases of the moon included in a creative story about how the moon changes when a little girl sneaks bites of her mama's cake。 This book was super cute and educational! I thought this was an adorable mythical book explaining why the moon changes shapes。 It is a quick read with beautiful illustrations of a bright moon。 It shows a sweet relationship between mother and child。 I also like that it includes mooncakes which are a popular baked good for Chinese celebrations。

Perfection!

Cute way to think about the moon phases。

I think this book would be great for younger kids, the temptation is something that the little kids can relate to。 I enjoyed how this book was telling a story, but also showing the reader the different phases of the moon。 The way the author and illustrator incorporated this into the story was very creative and added so much to the story。

The high rating is mostly for the art。 The black background is perfect for the striking brightness of the mooncake and Little Star eating away at it。 This would be a great read for a pajamas or nighttime themed story time。 I also recommend this for parents of young children。 This should be on your little one's bookshelf。 The high rating is mostly for the art。 The black background is perfect for the striking brightness of the mooncake and Little Star eating away at it。 This would be a great read for a pajamas or nighttime themed story time。 I also recommend this for parents of young children。 This should be on your little one's bookshelf。 。。。more

I loved this book as it told a story about about the phases of the moon and why they change。 This book is about a little girl who baked a moon cake with her mom and couldn’t resist having a bite each night even though her mom told her not too。 Every night that the little girl had a bite, the pictures showed the moon changing into different phases。 This would be a great story to read to your students as they are learning about the moon and how the moon changes。 I think this book is great for chil I loved this book as it told a story about about the phases of the moon and why they change。 This book is about a little girl who baked a moon cake with her mom and couldn’t resist having a bite each night even though her mom told her not too。 Every night that the little girl had a bite, the pictures showed the moon changing into different phases。 This would be a great story to read to your students as they are learning about the moon and how the moon changes。 I think this book is great for children ages 3-6。 I loved the pictures throughout this book and thought the contrast between the black pages and yellow moon was very interesting and made the colors pop。 。。。more

A sweet, lovely little book with gorgeous illustrations and a charming story。

Cute story and illustrations。 Kids that adore their mama and like matching pajama sets will note that detail with delight。

This Caldecott medal award winning book was a fun read。 Great for little kids to understand and read aloud。 Maybe 2nd-5th grade they can read by themselves but the younger one can be read to with ease。

So fun!

Read this and served 100 mooncakes and cups of tea to my students today。 They loved every minute and so did I!

This book will certainly make you smile。 And it might just make you nostalgic for all the sweet treats you secretly nibbled as a child。 In this magical imagining of the phases of the moon, Little Star and her mother bake a huge mooncake and put it up in the sky。 Every night, unable to resist, Little Star sneaks a few nibbles of the mooncake, creating the phases of the moon。 At the end of the cycle, when the mooncake has been completely eaten, Little Star and her mother begin their work on anothe This book will certainly make you smile。 And it might just make you nostalgic for all the sweet treats you secretly nibbled as a child。 In this magical imagining of the phases of the moon, Little Star and her mother bake a huge mooncake and put it up in the sky。 Every night, unable to resist, Little Star sneaks a few nibbles of the mooncake, creating the phases of the moon。 At the end of the cycle, when the mooncake has been completely eaten, Little Star and her mother begin their work on another mooncake。For more books on Mid-Autumn Festival check out my post。I also have some Mandarin Chinese picks for Mid-Autumn Festival here and other book recommendations on my blog。 。。。more

The quest to read 75 books for my youth lit class begins! I'm going to be tackling all of the picture books and board books as early as I can so that I can tackle harder books later in the semester。 I loved the art in this book, and I loved that it was a book about the moon and the moon phases。 I loved that little kids could relate to this book (who doesn't want to eat cake?) and that adults could find some humor in it too。 This would be a really great book to read for preschool storytime。 The quest to read 75 books for my youth lit class begins!

Pennsylvania Freeze listREALLY。?!?!? What on earth? It is a sweet story about a little girl eating a moon cake every night。 It shows the phases of the moon and the crumbs become stars。 I can’t imagine what anyone is objecting to? There are no white people in the story because there are only two characters, the mother and daughter。 There is absolutely nothing offensive。 Would pair well for a lesson with moon festival and moon cakes, or it would be great for talking about the links between folklor Pennsylvania Freeze listREALLY。?!?!?
